Diving on the northwest coast of Mallorca

Do you want to go diving? If so, you will find some of the most interesting divespots on the Island around the cliffy coast of Puerto de Sóller. Several ample caves, cleft rock formations and an active underwater life attract divers to Mallorcas northwest coast.

Between 12 and 35 meters, there´s rarely a dive where you won´t see Moraines, Octopus, Prawns, Brazilian groupers, Gilthead seabreams, Tuna or Barracudas. With a good eye and some luck, various slugs and seahorses or the scorpionfish ( „Cap Roig“) can be recorded into the divers logbook. Very lucky divers are talking about encounters with little Stringrays, Dolphins or Turtles.

Between June and September, the water temperature is a pleasant 22-24°C at the surface. Then, some dives can be done just wearing shorty. Only seldomly will a bad sea condition stop you from a dive trip and underwater currents are exceptions that don´t occur very often.

The diving school „Octopus“ opens between april and october and is run by the english owners Tony and Jane who took it from Marc and Marilen in 2006. During the summer months you´ll find that diving trips are mostly fully booked whereas during off season there are smaller groups on each trip andit´s possible to really focus on individual interests.

The boat used for the diving trips is 10m long, powered by a 750ccmmotor and is laid out for 10 divers and their equipment. Walking to theboat takes around 2 min. from the diving school whereas the equipmentis being transfered by car. After the dive you can rinse out yourequipment at the fresh water washdown yard right next to the school.You can even rent Rebreather equipment or an underwater scooter. If youwant to take a taster course, learn how to scuba dive or just getbetter at diving by perfecting your skills, you can take standard PADIcourses from OpenWater-Diver to Divemaster. Tony´s a certified PADICavern Instructor and can teach you in that specific field. FurtherPADI 5 Star Resort speciality courses contain Rebreather, Nitrox,Underwaterscooter, Naturalist and Underwater fotography-/filming.

Diving trips usually start around 9am and 4pm. You´re advised to bookin advance. Get-in is 30 min before. Nightdives are on Fridays,sometimes on a Tuesday and after prior agreement. The morning trips aredouble tank trips, meaning that you dive twice and return to the baseafter 3 ½ hours. The dive spots can be agreed on with Tony and Janeprior to the trip, depending on the weather conditions.

• Cova Es Cavall
  Half way to Sa Calobra. A U-like cavern with its entrance at 18 and exit at 12m. Half way into the cavern, you dive through a chimney like tube upwards onto the exit plain.
• Cap Gros
  Just at the exit of the habour, underneath the Lighthouse „Far es Cap Gros“ with a steep and cliffy coast, as well as some very nice caverns that are well worth seeing
• Sa Cova Blava
  The best known dive spot around Sóller; a huge and to both sides opened cavern that´s flooded with light, between Puerto and Sa Muleta.
  
• Sa Foradada
  The very distinctive rock formation above the divespot has very interesting landscapes underneath the water surface as well as a cavern.
